Arduino-Based Power Theft Detection and Meter Tamper Alert System

The Arduino-Based Power Theft Detection and Meter Tamper Alert System is a smart electrical monitoring system designed to detect unauthorized electricity usage and physical tampering with an electricity meter.

## Project Introduction The **Arduino-Based Power Theft Detection and Meter Tamper Alert System** is a smart electrical monitoring system developed to detect unauthorized electricity consumption and meter tampering. The system uses voltage and current sensors to continuously monitor electrical parameters and compare the incoming supply with the consumer's usage. When an abnormal difference or possible illegal connection is detected, the Arduino processes the sensor readings and activates an alarm. The system also incorporates a **meter tamper detection mechanism** to identify unauthorized interference with the meter. A **buzzer** provides a local warning, while an **LCD display** shows the system status and detected conditions. For remote notification, a **GSM module** is integrated to send an **SMS alert** to the responsible authority when power theft or meter tampering is detected. A **relay** can also be used to control the electrical load when necessary. The system is designed and tested using **Proteus simulation**, providing a practical and cost-effective approach to improving electricity monitoring, detecting suspicious activities, and reducing losses associated with power theft.

How the System Works

The Arduino-Based Power Theft Detection and Meter Tamper Alert System continuously monitors the electrical supply using voltage and current sensors. The sensors provide real-time electrical measurements to the Arduino, which processes and compares the readings to determine whether the system is operating under normal conditions.

Under normal operation, the measured electrical parameters remain within the expected range. However, when an abnormal difference is detected between the supply and consumer-side measurements, the Arduino identifies the condition as a possible power theft event.

The system also monitors for meter tampering. When unauthorized interference with the meter or its wiring is detected, the Arduino immediately activates the warning system. The LCD displays the appropriate warning message, while the buzzer provides a local alarm.

For remote notification, the integrated GSM module sends an SMS alert to the designated authority or system operator. A relay can also be activated to control the connected load when required.

The entire process allows the system to provide real-time monitoring, automatic detection, local alarm notification, and remote SMS alerts, making it suitable for intelligent electricity monitoring and power theft detection.

System Components and Technology

The Arduino-Based Power Theft Detection and Meter Tamper Alert System combines electronic sensors, a microcontroller, communication components, and warning devices to provide automated electricity monitoring.

The Arduino microcontroller serves as the main processing unit. It receives information from the voltage and current sensors as well as the meter tamper detection circuit. The Arduino analyzes these signals and determines whether the electrical system is operating normally or whether a suspicious condition has occurred.

Voltage and current sensors are used to monitor the electrical parameters of the system. By comparing the measured values, the system can identify unusual conditions that may indicate unauthorized electricity usage.

A meter tamper detection circuit provides an additional layer of protection by detecting unauthorized interference with the meter or its associated connections. When tampering is detected, the Arduino triggers the alert system.

The 16×2 LCD provides real-time information such as voltage, current, system status, and theft or tamper warnings. A buzzer provides an audible alarm when an abnormal condition is detected.

A GSM module is included for remote communication. When power theft or meter tampering is detected, the GSM module sends an SMS notification to the designated authority or system operator.

A relay module can be used to control the electrical load when a serious fault or unauthorized condition is detected. The complete circuit can be designed and tested in Proteus simulation before physical construction.

Together, these components create an automated monitoring system capable of detecting suspicious electrical activity, identifying meter tampering, providing local warnings, and sending remote SMS alerts.
